Alexa Mendes is a bilingual college senior attending the Honors College at Baylor University. She is earning a double major in Baylor Business Fellows (a selective honors business program) and Management Information Systems, a minor in Spanish, a certificate in Business Analytics, a certificate in Global Engagement, and additional honors recognition through the rigorous Baylor Interdisciplinary Core program. Alexa was selected as Student of the Year at her elementary, middle, and high schools, and continues to strive for excellence today in her leadership roles at Baylor as a Faculty Assistant in Baylor's Information Systems & Business Analytics Department, Public Relations Committee Chair in the Honors Residential College, Core Team Director of Communications and Ministry Leader at St. Peter Catholic Student Center, and Study Abroad Student Leader with the Center for Global Engagement.
Alexa has been involved in leadership programs since fifth grade. In high school she was elected by 1,800 students to serve as Sophomore Director (planning the winter formal dance) and Student Body President. During her term as President, Alexa led her Associated Student Body (ASB) program to connect students through the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. She is beyond grateful for the experiences within that leadership program that have shaped her into the person she is today, and is honored to be the first inductee into her high school's ASB Hall of Fame. In her latest book, Leadership is a Lifestyle, Alexa outlines some of the main ideas she learned through her time in ASB. |
The summer after her sophomore year (at age sixteen), Alexa wrote her first book, #Unsubscribed: How I am thriving in high school without social media (and you can, too), after she was unable to attend eight week courses in fiction writing and neuroscience at Stanford University because she tore her ACL playing club basketball. She then spoke to a variety of audiences advocating about the importance of moderating social media.
Alexa has also been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. After earning both her Bronze and Silver Awards, Alexa earned the Girl Scout Gold Award. The highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, the Gold Award is equivalent to an Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts and is only awarded to 6% of Girl Scouts annually. For her project, Alexa educated her peers about healthy stress management techniques through presentations, videos, a website, and trilingual booklets.
As a student athlete, Alexa earned a position on the Varsity girls basketball team both her freshman and sophomore years. Her team won the regional championship for the first time in school history when she was a freshman and once again returned to the championship her sophomore year.
And as a lover of life, Alexa hopes to share joy with others.
